Material Pictures and Zik Zak Filmworks announced today in an official press release that Chiwetel Ejiofor, Chris Pine, and Amanda Seyfried have been cast in the post-apocalyptic thriller, Z for Zachariah.
Nissar Modi is writing the screenplay for the film, an adaptation of the 1974 novel by Robert C. O'Brien. The story follows a girl who believes she is the only survivor after a devastating nuclear event, but she soon learns she is not alone.
Material Pictures' Tobey Maguire and Matthew Plouffe are producing the film along with Zik Zak Filmworks' Skúli Malmquist, Thor Sigurjonsson and Palomar Pictures' Joni Sighvatsson. Gary Ross and Lucky Hat Entertainment's Stephen Bannatyne will executive produce the project, along with Silver Reel's Claudia Bluemhuber and Lotus Entertainment's Jim Seibel and Bill Johnson.
The movie is slated to begin production in August.

Deadline reports that Reese Witherspoon has been cast in Inherent Vice for director Paul Thomas Anderson.
Witherspoon joins a cast including Joaquin Phoenix, Benicio Del Toro and Owen Wilson. The movie is an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's 2009 novel, officially described as follows:
"Part noir, part psychedelic romp, all Thomas Pynchon- private eye Doc Sportello surfaces, occasionally, out of a marijuana haze to watch the end of an era. In this lively yarn, Thomas Pynchon, working in an unaccustomed genre that is at once exciting and accessible, provides a classic illustration of the principle that if you can remember the sixties, you weren't there. It's been a while since Doc Sportello has seen his ex- girlfriend. Suddenly she shows up with a story about a plot to kidnap a billionaire land developer whom she just happens to be in love with. It's the tail end of the psychedelic sixties in L.A., and Doc knows that "love" is another of those words going around at the moment, like "trip" or "groovy," except that this one usually leads to trouble."

Sylvester Stallone has provided some updates about The Expendables 3 on his Twitter. He confirmed that Mickey Rourke would return and he's talked with Wesley Snipes about signing on.
He wrote: "Can not WAIT to fight to the top again!"
He also teased that Jackie Chan would join the cast. He added: "What's the plan? Ask Jackie Chan...."
Finally, he said that they were looking at The Raid: Redemption, which he thinks The Expendables 3 "could do better". He said he was thinking of "raiding The Raid", perhaps hinting at getting some of the actors of that film in the sequel.
The Expendables 3 will be directed by Patrick Hughes (Red Hill). The second film starred Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Nan Yu, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Liam Hemsworth, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's unknown how many of those names would be returning.

Bruce Willis is set to topline the film Expiration. The Wrap reports that Willis will take the lead role in the $60 million action-thriller, which does not yet have a director. The script was written by Brian Tucker.
Willis will play a hitman who, after being lethally poisoned, races to find a cure before he "expires."

The Wrap reports that Emily Blunt and Christine Baranski are in talks to join the cast of Into the Woods for director Rob Marshall.
They would join a cast that includes Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep, Chris Pine, Jake Gyllenhaal and James Corden.
Into the Woods weaves together several beloved fairytale stories (Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel) into the original story of a Baker (Corden) and his wife (the role Blunt is in talks to play) who try to reverse a curse on their family in order to have a child.
Walt Disney Pictures is hoping to start filming in the fall. James Lapine wrote the screenplay. John DeLuca is producing.

ComingSoon.net reports that Gerard Butler is in talks to join the cast of The Raven, a new sci-fi action movie for Universal Pictures.
The movie is based on Ricardo de Montreuil and Antonio Perez's 2010 short film. Liam hemsworth was originally in talks for the role, but now the focus has shifted to Butler after the recent success of Olympus Has Fallen. In The Raven, Butler would play "a man with remarkable powers who is being chased by the government and the military who both want those powers working for them."
The movie would be co-financed and produced by Universal Pictures and Gold Circle. Mark Wahlberg and Steve Levinson will also produce.

Here is the final trailer via Universal Pictures for Fast & Furious 6. The film opens on May 24 and is directed by Justin Lin. Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Elsa Pataky, Luke Evans and Gina Carano all star in the film.
Since Dom (Diesel) and Brian's (Walker) Rio heist toppled a kingpin's empire and left their crew with $100 million, our heroes have scattered across the globe. But their inability to return home and living forever on the lam have left their lives incomplete.
Meanwhile, Hobbs (Johnson) has been tracking an organization of lethally skilled mercenary drivers across 12 countries, whose mastermind (Evans) is aided by a ruthless second-in-command revealed to be the love Dom thought was dead, Letty (Rodriguez). The only way to stop the criminal outfit is to outmatch them at street level, so Hobbs asks Dom to assemble his elite team in London. Payment? Full pardons for all of them so they can return home and make their families whole again.

Star Trek Into Darkness may not have been the box office bonanza that some people had hoped for but it still crushed the box office with a first-place finish. The film brought in $70.6 million over three days to top the rankings this weekend, averaging $18,241 from the 3,868 theaters that it opened in. Early industry predictions had the film opening as high as the $80 million range and a $100 million four-day opening, but those predictions proved a bit overly optimistic. The film is no flop by any stretch though, as its four-day domestic gross of $84.1 million is still ahead of the original film's $79.2 million opening weekend in 2009. The film is particularly doing well overseas, where it has pulled in $80.5 million and could end up doubling the first film's $127 million international take. (Star Trek has not traditionally done well outside of the US.) That gives the film a total worldwide gross of $164.6 million thus far with a budget of $190 million.
In second place was Iron Man 3, down a spot from last week. The film brought in $35.2 million to bring its domestic gross to $337.1 million domestically and its worldwide gross to $1.03 billion worldwide. The film is now the ninth-highest grossing film worldwide of all time. Its production budget was $200 million.
The Great Gatsby dropped one spot in its second week, finishing at #3 with $23.4 million. That translates to a 53% drop which is fairly good considering its opening weekend gross and compared against other female audience-skewing films such as Magic Mike and Sex in the City. The film has a domestic gross of $90.2 million and a worldwide gross of $95.6 million from a budget of $105 million.
Michael Bay's Pain & Gain was also down a rung, finishing at #4 in its fourth weekend with $3.1 million. The film, which stars the Rock and Mark Wahlberg, has a total of $46.6 million from a $26 million budget.
The Croods refuses to say die as it hangs around the charts. The DreamWorks Animation prehistoric animated film rose two spots in its ninth week to #5 with $2.8 million. It has a total of $176.8 million domestically and $537.4 million worldwide from a budget of $135 million.
42 was down one spots in its sixth week, ending up at #6 with $2.7 million. The baseball biopic has a total of $88.7 million from a production budget of $40 million.
Oblivion fell a spot to #7 in its fourth weekend, finishing with $2.2 million. Tom Cruise's sci-fi film has grossed $85.5 million domestically and $246.4 million worldwide; the budget was $120 million.
Matthew McConaughey's drama Mud held steady in its fourth week, staying at #8 with $2.2 million. The film has grossed $11.6 million from a budget of $10 million.
Tyler Perry Presents Peeples took a mighty fall in its second week, down five places to #9 with $2.2 million. The Perry-produced film fell 56% which is not the worst result for a Perry film; they are traditionally quite front-loaded. But the low opening weekend gross more or less doomed this one from the get-go. The film has a two-week total of $7.9 million with a $15 million budget.
The Big Wedding was down two rungs in its fourth week, finishing at #10 with $1.1 million. The ensemble film has grossed $20.2 million from a $35 million budget.
The weekend box office tally was $149.8 million, up 5% from last year's $142.8 million gross that was led by The Avengers' third weekend with $55.6 million.
Note: Numbers include Sunday estimates and are three-day estimates. A studio recoups 55% of a film's grosses on average, meaning it needs to approximately double its budget to be profitable during its theatrical run.
